Original at http://www.flickr.com/photos/random_matt/2905034454/At this time of year our thoughts are turning to snow. There are places within just a few hours from Phoenix where you can satisfy that urge to ski and play in the snow. These make great day trips for family outings or weekend ski getaways.

Arizona Snowbowl is about two hours north of Phoenix by freeway.  Arizona Snowbowl, when in full operation, has five ski lifts with the highest being 11,500 feet. The longest run is two miles. There are 32 runs/trails with the breakdown for skiers as follows: Beginner: 37%, Intermediate: 42%, Advanced: 21%.  It also has some very lovely hiking trails.

Although Arizona Snowbowl may be the best known ski area in Arizona because of its proximity to Flagstaff. Sunrise Park is the largest. It is located in McNary in the Arizona White Mountains. Sunrise is abour 200 miles northeast of Phoenix.  Sunrise Park Resort is owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe.  Sunrise operates eight ski lifts and there are over 13 miles of trails for cross country skiing.  There are special programs available for children so they can enjoy their time in the snow.

You might be surprised to know that you can ski in Tucson (2 hours south of Phoenix on Interstate 10), Arizona! Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley is in the Catalina Mountains and is the southernmost ski resort in the United States. Ski Valley currently has one ski lift and eighteen ski trails.
