Wags for Wishes Chandler AZ

Part competition, part festival, this fourth annual dog-centric gala benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday, Jan 21-23.
Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse, 5700 W. North Loop Road, Chandler.
Admission: $5, free parking.

This unique event, now in its fourth year in Arizona, has attracted dog owners and lovers from all over the western US to compete, partake, and enjoy a wide variety of dog-related competitions and events while raising fund for Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Arizona. Competitions are all sanctioned through national organizations, and include Agility, Flyball and SplashDog (dock diving).

This event is about dogs raising money for kids. About $60,000 has been raised during the past three years, when the festival was in the West Valley. It moves to Rawhide this year, where organizers hope the new, larger space will allow them to raise $30,000.

Wish-granting costs an average of $7,000 per child,  the money raised at Wags for Wishes is only used for granting.

The event is part competition, part festival. Funds are raised through admission ($5), competitor entry fees and a raffle of dog-related items. Some activities also cost a small fee.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their dogs and try activities like racing in Lure For A Cure, splash jumping off a dock, and trying a musical freestyle Frisbee routine.

Guests can test their dog's manners during the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test, and see if their pooch has what it takes to be a therapy dog at the Therapy Dog International Testing area.

Other activities include  meeting DOC-BARKER the Make-A-Wish Ambassador Dog, watching the Best Dog Trick contest, posing for pet photography, and much more!
