For decades, the southwest Valley has been a rural area. In recent years, housing developments began replacing farms as newcomers began moving in, and now the area boasts tree-lined boulevards as well as mountain views.
Like the rest of the Valley, the region grew rapidly during the past few years, and new homes and businesses continue to pop up.
The southwest Valley is accessible to downtown Phoenix, via Interstate 10, but commuters who drive the freeway during rush hour often face heavy traffic. Goodyear, Avondale and Litchfield Park have helped accelerate a project to add extra lanes to I-10.
The southwest's Valley's business community is catching up with recent residential growth, and more employment opportunities are becoming available. Wal-Mart and Albertson's have distribution centers here, and several companies, including PetSmart, have built warehouses.
Meanwhile, new schools have been launched and improvements made to existing facilities. Estrella Mountain Community College began offering classes in 1990 and opened its Avondale campus in fall 1992.
The southwest Valley draws visitors and residents with facilities such as Litchfield Park's Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa. Phoenix International Raceway, with its 1-mile paved oval track and 78,484 seats, hosts two NASCAR races each year and hosts the Indy Racing League. Goodyear's spring-training ballpark opened in 2009 and is spring training home to the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds.
The southwest Valley also boasts Estrella Mountain Regional Park, with 20,000 acres that accommodate campers, hikers, horseback riders and golfers. To the west is White Tanks Mountain Regional Park, dotted with petroglyphs, hiking trails and a waterfall.
